What the Bible Says about Hell

The final sermon in the Doctrine series deals with the judgment of God. The sermon, however, focuses more on the judgment of believers than on the judgment of unbelievers. The judgment of unbelievers may not be a popular topic today, but that's not because the Bible doesn't say much about it.

In thinking about God's judgment on unbelievers, some of the common questions people have are:

  • What will Hell be like?
  • Will Hell be eternal?
  • Can someone get out of Hell once they're in?
  • Are there different degrees of punishment in Hell?

These are all important questions.

As we think about the answers to these questions, the most important thing to keep in in mind is that we are disciples of Christ. Jesus Christ talked a lot about Hell, and we need to make sure that Jesus and His word are the authority on the subject. Hell (like any other doctrine or topic) needs to be addressed with the Bible as our authority—not the culture and not our emotions.

For those of you who want to study the topic of Hell and judgment, below is a list of some passage you'll want to look at. You can try seeing these verses all at once by using the Mutliple Verse Retrieval on Blue Letter Bible (that will let you change the translation and formatting). Keep in mind, this is just a sample of passages. There are many other passages that teach us about God's wrath and judgment.

More important than simply forming a theological position, however, is making sure we let the truth of God affect our lives. As you look at the passages below, ask yourself: What response is the speaker/writer calling me to?

Also, don't forget to ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, teach you, and conform you to the image of Christ. The truth of Hell and judgment should affect our personal holiness, our gratitude for salvation, and our evangelism of the lost.

If you have any questions as you study, feel free to contact the church office. You may want to talk to a pastor or get some extra resources to help you study. The church has many resources we'd love to make available to you—even some that specifically address the topic of Heaven and Hell.

Blessings in Christ.
