Dios Se Revela - God Reveals Himself

December 18, 2022 Preacher: Luis A. Cardenas Series: Bilingual Sermons

Topic: Español, English, Bilingual Passage: Luke 1:26-38

Verse 26 tells us that the angel Gabriel came to Mary in the sixth month. That’s talking about the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy.

We find out in verse 36 that Mary and Elizabeth are related. Besides being part of the same family, both are going to miraculously have a child. Despite having that in common, there were some important differences between them.

With that brief introduction, let’s look a little more closely at this meeting between the angel Gabriel and the virgin Mary. We can divide the story into two sections: The Divine Revelation and The Divine Explanation.

We might be used to Mary being a major part of the Christmas story, but up to this point in her life, she was a relatively obscure person. And that’s why the angel’s greeting is so surprising.

As a humble, young girl—maybe about 15 years old—Mary is caught off-guard by the angel’s message. Verse 29 tells us that she doesn’t understand what he means, and she’s confused and a little anxious.

God is not just revealing something to Mary. Through Mary, and through the child she will bear, God is going to reveal something to the entire world. In the coming verses, we get three revelations.

The angel says to Mary, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” Here in the baby’s name, we see a preview of God’s merciful salvation.

This baby is going to demonstrate the salvation of God for His people. Just like God used Moses to free His people from slavery in Egypt, this coming Child is going to free God’s people in some way.

The second revelation we get in the angel’s message is God’s absolute power. Look with me at verse 32.

“The Most High” is a distinct expression. It’s used about 40 times in the Old Testament, and it is exclusively used for the living and true God, the God of Israel. It’s a phrase that demonstrates God’s exalted power and status over everything else.

Before Mary has a chance to let this sink in, Gabriel continues with a third revelation. This child will also reveal God’s eternal authority. He reveals God’s merciful salvation, God’s absolute power, and now, God’s eternal authority.

You can have the power (the physical ability) to drive your neighbor’s car, but that doesn’t mean you have the authority to do it.

But this child—this baby who will come from Mary’s womb—will demonstrate God’s absolute power and God’s eternal authority. He will rule forever.

David ruled over Israel for 40 years. But God had promised him that one day, a descendent of his would come and rule forever in peace and prosperity. This would be fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham as well.

Earthly kings only endured for a limited time. And after they died, a new king would come and could possibly change the direction of the nation. But now, Mary has been given the privilege of bringing into this world God’s promised, eternal King.

In her humility, Mary asks one simple question in verse 34—“How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

Her question isn’t about the timing; it’s about the mechanism. How is this going to happen? This brings us to the second part of today’s story—the Divine Explanation.

The angel doesn’t give a scientific response. He doesn’t answer the question from a biological perspective because what’s about to happen doesn’t fall within the laws of science.

This is the only divine explanation we get. God will do it by His Holy Spirit. This child will be conceived miraculously because He will not be an ordinary child. He will be the Son of God.

“Behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. [37] For nothing will be impossible with God.”

In the end, this is not a message about Mary. Mary is simply the human vessel God is going to use. This is a message about God.

God delights in revealing Himself. And the Christmas season, along with the Christmas story, is supposed to be a reminder that God has revealed, and will reveal Himself, in a powerful way.

We know now that the expression of God’s power came once, and will come again, in Jesus Christ. Jesus came first to reveal God’s salvation by dying on the cross for sinners.

After Jesus died and resurrected, He ascended to the Father, but God has promised that He will return one day and assume His place on the throne of David, and He will bring this world into an eternal peace for all who belong to God.

How should you receive this message of God’s salvation and power and authority? Mary models it for us in verse 38.

Knowing God’s power and authority, Mary’s response is one of humility and submission. And that should be our response too. If God is our King, then we are His slaves.

You have a choice to make today. Will you recognize the mercy and the power of God through Jesus Christ? Like Mary, will you surrender to God’s design for you? Or are you going to reject God and pursue your own plan?

If you call out for mercy today, if you ask Him to save you—not based on your own goodness, but on the basis of His mercy—Jesus will save you. He’ll forgive you and cleanse you. And you will become a child of God.

Those who belong to God through Jesus Christ will inherit a new heaven and a new earth where peace and righteousness will reign forever and ever.

Este es el mensaje de Dios. Este es la promesa de Dios.
