In all the gospels, the story of Jesus does not end with His death on the cross. Without what happened afterward, our faith and Christ’s mission would be incomplete.

This morning, we are going to be looking at Matthew’s account of what happened after Jesus died. And we will begin in chapter 27. Matthew 27.

Mateo 27.

When Jesus died, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, the earth shook, the rocks were split, and the dead came out from the grave.

Verses 55 and 56 tell us that the women who had been part of Jesus’ ministry in Israel looked on from a distance. They would have seen Jesus’ body taken down and wrapped and laid in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.

We’re going to pick up the story right there with what happened on Saturday, beginning in verse 62. The focus, for now, is the tomb, so let’s begin our message with the heading “The Tomb Is Secured.”

63They said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”

Verse 65—Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

But then comes Sunday morning, and we have a new heading for the story: “The Tomb Is Disturbed.”

What the Jews and the Romans did wasn’t enough to interrupt what God had already planned. Look with me at Matthew 28:1.

The woman probably imagined they’d be the first visitors to the tomb that day, but they were wrong. God sent the first visitor—a powerful angel.

Verse 3—The angel’s appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.

“The Tomb Is Empty”—that’s our third heading for today. “The Tomb Is Empty.” This is the message the angel has for them.

The tomb is empty, not because the body has been lost, but because Jesus has risen. He is not there anymore, and the angel invites them to see it for themselves.

7Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”

The women’s obedience to the angel’s message is an expression of their faith. They don’t ask questions; they simply leave to announce what has happened.

Before they get to meet the group of disciples, however, they are met by Jesus himself.

9Behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

But before we get to Jesus’ final instructions, the scene in Matthew goes back to the Jews and the Romans. The women left to find the disciples, and the soldiers go on a journey of their own. Look at verse 11.

That report would have included the angel, the earthquake, and their terror. All that was evidence that something supernatural had occurred.

12And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’

Roman soldiers who had been placed as guards did so knowing that their life would be in jeopardy if they failed. They can’t say that they were overpowered by untrained Jewish fishermen, so this is the best story they can come up with.

14If this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

God’s word tells us that Jesus rose from the dead. That is what the Old Testament said would happen. That is what Jesus said would happen. And that is what the women and the Apostles proclaimed.

Jesús apareció varias veces a Sus discípulos. Les mostró que Él había resucitado. Él quería que no tendrían ninguna duda.

But when someone hears that message and when someone realizes that the tomb is empty, they’ve only got two options. Either they will suppress the truth, or they will submit to it. You suppress or you submit.

Ever since the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, stories have been told trying to explain a missing body and an empty tomb.

Another theory states that Mary’s baby was somehow switched at birth and the one they called Jesus had an identical twin whom no one knew about until after the Resurrection when he deceived everyone.

Some teach that what the women and the disciples saw wasn’t really a physically resurrected Jesus. It could have been a hallucination or a spirit. This ignores the fact that people touched Him and ate with Him afterward.

All of these theories are simply ways to reject or suppress the truth taught by the Old Testament, by Jesus, by the angels, and by the women and the Apostle’s. Jesus rose from the dead.

The book of Acts and the other gospels tell us that Jesus appeared to His disciples several times over a forty-day period. First Corinthians 15 says that Jesus was seen on one occasion by over 500 people. The end of Matthew’s gospel is likely that event.

Verse 16—Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.

Jesus, the resurrected King, has called His followers together, and He is going to speak to them. He has orders for them beginning in verse 18.

In giving His life and in being raised from the dead, Jesus has received from His Father all authority in heaven and earth. He has been exalted over everything.

19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

The risen Lord Jesus commanded His followers to go out proclaiming His message so that people from every nation would know who He is, believe in Him, and surrender to Him.

Submitting ourselves to the truth of Christ’s resurrection means we proclaim and we obey. Do you suppress the truth about Jesus, or do you submit to it? You answer that question with every decision you make, and you answer it with the pattern of your life.

The victory that Jesus won over sin and over death can be yours if you surrender your life to Christ who died for sin and was raised again. This is the message that Jesus’ followers have preached for the past 2,000 years.

One day, the risen and glorified Jesus will return to judge the world and rescue His people. Until that day comes, Jesus has sent us His Spirit to always be with us and help us in the mission we’ve been given.

Our Lord has risen from the dead. We believe Him, we serve Him, and we depend on Him to lead us every day until He comes.
